Steve Coleman – BI Manager, Newell Brands
Steve has been working as an application developer for many years, and has been specializing in the Business Intelligence area for the past ten. He has experience in both SQL Server and Oracle RDBMS platforms. Although he’s been a manager for a long time, he’s always been able to be very hands-on when it comes to technology. He is currently a Manager for the BI team at Newell Brands (the the parent company of Rubbermaid, Sharpie, Graco, Coleman brands) and is based in Huntersville. Newell Brands is transitioning to Microsoft’s Azure environment, and Steve serves as a BI Architect specializing in the Azure SQL Data Warehouse and Azure Analysis Services platforms..In this session, Steve will give a practical overview of the Microsoft’s Azure cloud solution, and in particular the Azure Data Warehouse product. He will highlight the benefits of using a cloud platform (along with things to watch out for). In the overview of the Azure SQL Data Warehouse platform, Steve will highlight both the similarities between ADW and the traditional SQL Server product, as well as the differences. The ADW smells like SQL Server, looks like SQL Server, and feels like SQL Server, but behind the scenes its a very different product. Azure SQL Data Warehouse is the Azure version of the on-prem SQL Parallel Data Datawarehouse (PDW) — the MPP (Massive Parallel Processing) version of SQL Server.
